Learn to Cross Stitch for Free: An Interactive First Lesson
Our free Craft Academy teaches cross stitch by doing: watch the needle, try each stitch on screen, read a real chart and make a heart bookmark in one evening.
Most beginner guides to cross stitch are a wall of text and a diagram. You read them, sit down with fabric and a needle, and find out you didn’t quite get it.
So we built something different: the Craft Academy, a free set of short, interactive lessons. Each one ends with a small, real piece you can finish in an evening. The first is a heart bookmark.
Try the stitch before you read about it
The lesson has seven short steps:
- See it. The finished bookmark comes first, so you know what you are making.
- Watch. An animated needle makes one cross stitch, then a whole row there and back. Each clip stops so you can try it straight after. You can slow it down, show the back of the fabric, or switch to a left-handed view.
- Try. Tap the holes in the fabric in the right order. The first level shows you the next hole and the second only its number. The third checks the rules instead of one fixed order: every square gets a full cross, and every top leg points the same way.
- Read the chart. Three quick questions: where to start, which thread a symbol stands for, and how many stitches are in a row.
- Design. Finish the heart in a small version of the Knytstudio editor, then swap the red for a colour you pick. The checks tell you exactly what is still missing.
- Stitch. Make it with real thread and tap off each stitch as you go. The next stitch is outlined and the current row is shaded, so you don’t lose your place. Your marks stay in your browser, so you can stop and pick up tomorrow.
- Review. Two short cards come back after a few days, which is how things stick.
Ulla, our sheep, guides you through it. Every demo is drawn from the lesson pattern, seen from above the way you see your own hoop.
What you need
The five beginner lessons share one small set of supplies, about €11 in total:
- 14-count Aida, 20 x 30 cm
- a size 24 tapestry needle
- stranded cotton in 4 colours
- a 10 cm hoop and small scissors
Cheap supplies are fine. You stitch with 2 of the 6 strands, so one skein lasts for many pieces. If you are unsure about fabric, our guide to which cross stitch count to use explains it, and the cross stitch glossary covers the terms you will meet on a chart.
What comes next
Lesson 1 is live now. The path continues with a leaf card (half stitches and starting a thread without a knot), a name tag (backstitch), a flower coaster (changing colours and parking threads) and finally a keyring you design yourself.
Start lesson 1: the heart bookmark. It is free and needs no account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I learn cross stitch online for free?
Yes. The Knytstudio Craft Academy is free and runs in your browser. The first lesson takes you from your very first stitch to a finished heart bookmark, and it needs no account.
How long does it take to learn cross stitch?
The stitch itself takes a few minutes to learn. The first lesson piece, a small heart, takes about an evening. Most people feel at home after a few small pieces.
What is a good first cross stitch project?
Something small, with few colours and no scattered single stitches, that you can finish in an evening: a bookmark, a small heart or a card. Finishing your first piece matters more than how impressive it is.
Is there a version for left-handed stitchers?
Yes. The animated demos in the lesson have a left-handed view that mirrors the whole movement.
