No. You can start designing immediately as a guest. Your patterns are saved locally in your browser. Creating a free account lets you save patterns to the cloud, share them, and access them from any device.

Knytstudio supports DMC, Anchor, and Madeira thread palettes for cross stitch. When you convert a photo or generate a design, colors are automatically matched to real thread numbers you can buy at your local craft store.

Yes. Choose Fuse Beads as your project type (or convert any pattern) and colors are matched to real Hama midi and Perler bead charts with official bag codes. The PDF export splits big designs into 29x29 pegboard pages and counts every bead of every color for your shopping list.

Yes. Choose Needlepoint as your project type (or convert any pattern) and you get DMC thread colors, mesh-count sizing for 10 to 18 count canvas, a tent-stitch realistic preview and a printable chart with a Thread Key.

Yes. Choose Diamond Painting as your project type (or convert any pattern) and colors map to DMC drill codes — the numbering printed on drill bags. Pick square or round drills, see a faceted realistic preview, and print a chart with a Drill Key that counts every diamond per color at the standard 2.5 mm grid.

Yes — any pattern converts between crafts. In the editor, use Pattern > Convert Craft; on community patterns, open "Make it in..." and pick any craft to remix and convert in one step. Colors are re-matched to the target craft's real palette and you can revert the conversion.

Both. You can start with a blank canvas and draw pixel by pixel, import a photo and convert it into a stitch chart, or use AI to generate a design from a text prompt. You can also combine approaches — for example, generating a base with AI and then editing it by hand.

Yes. Open Knytstudio in the built-in browser of the ChatGPT desktop app, open a pattern and ask for a change, like "swap the reds for darker ones" or "add a black border". ChatGPT edits the pattern while you watch, and every change is one Undo step. It works on the free plan. See what ChatGPT can do.

Yes. The PDF of your first pattern is free once you sign up. After that, unlock single patterns from €2.99 or go Pro at €4/month for unlimited PDF exports — ready to print or share.

The PDF includes a full-size stitch chart with symbols, a color key with thread numbers and quantities, a cover page with a preview of your design, and a thread shopping list. With Pro you can also hide the “Created with Knytstudio” footer.

Yes. When you publish a pattern, it gets a shareable link and appears in the Discover gallery where other crafters can find it. You can also share the link directly via social media or messaging.

Yes. Every pattern is private by default and only visible to you until you choose to publish it. Patterns saved as a guest are private too, since they only exist in your browser.

Yes. Public patterns in the Discover gallery can be remixed — you get your own copy to edit however you like. The original pattern stays unchanged, and the remix links back to the original creator.

Confetti refers to isolated single stitches of a color scattered across your pattern. The confetti removal tool automatically detects and replaces these stray stitches with neighboring colors, making the pattern cleaner and easier to stitch. See it in action in our photo-to-pattern tutorial.

Yes. Knytstudio is fully responsive and works on phones and tablets. The editor supports touch gestures for drawing, zooming, and panning. For the best experience on larger projects, a desktop or tablet is recommended.

Yes. You own the patterns you create. You are free to sell them on platforms like Etsy, Ravelry, or your own website, or share them on Discover. If you used a photo, make sure you have the rights to that image.
