Knitting Graph Paper Drawn to Your Gauge

Knit stitches are wider than they are tall, so a motif drawn on square graph paper comes out squashed. Enter your stitches and rows per 10 cm or 4 inches and print paper whose cells have the same shape as your stitches.

40 x 70 cells of 4.55 x 3.33 mm

At this gauge a stitch is 1.36 times as wide as it is tall.

Print at 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page, then check the 1 in and 1 cm bars.

Chart it in the app at this gauge

In the app, a knitting chart can draw each stitch in your gauge's proportions, like this paper (Stitches drawn to gauge), show a realistic knitted view, and write row-by-row instructions and a printable PDF. Free to start, no signup needed.

How to use it

  1. Knit and measure a gauge swatch, or take the gauge from your pattern or ball band.
  2. Enter the stitches and rows per 10 cm or per 4 inches.
  3. Pick A4 or Letter and the lines you want, then print or download.
  4. Print at 100% or Actual size and measure the 1 inch and 1 cm bars at the bottom. If they are right, each cell is one stitch at your gauge.

Why not square paper?

At a typical gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 cm, a stitch is 4.5 mm wide and 3.3 mm tall. A circle drawn 20 squares across and 20 squares high on square paper knits up about a third wider than it is tall. Paper drawn to your gauge shows the motif the way it will look knitted.

Reading a chart drawn on this paper

Knitting charts are read from the bottom up: row 1 is the bottom row. Worked flat, right-side rows are read from right to left and wrong-side rows from left to right; in the round, every round is read from right to left. The heavy line every 10 cells makes counting easier.
