Needlepoint Canvas Calculator

Mesh count is the number of holes per inch of canvas — 13 mesh has 13 stitches per inch. Higher mesh means finer detail and a smaller finished piece from the same chart.

Finished size = stitches divided by mesh count, in inches. A 130-stitch-wide design on 13 mesh is 10 inches wide; the same design on 18 mesh is about 7.2 inches.

Add 5-8 cm (2-3 inches) of blank canvas on every side of the design for blocking and framing. The calculator shows the design size; add margins on top of that when cutting canvas.

13 mesh mono canvas is the most common all-round choice: big enough holes to work comfortably, fine enough for real detail. Use 10 or 12 mesh with thicker wool, and 18 mesh for small detailed pieces.
