Make a diamond painting chart from a photoHow many drills do I need?
A full-coverage diamond painting has one drill in every cell of its grid, so the total is the drills across times the drills down. How many fit on a side depends on the drill shape:
Square (2.5 mm): drills across = canvas cm x 4
Round (2.8 mm): drills across = canvas cm x 3.57, rounded down
Only whole drills count: part of a drill at the edge does not fit, which is why the calculator always rounds down.
Worked example: a 30 x 40 cm canvas
- Square drills: 30 x 4 = 120 across and 40 x 4 = 160 down, so 120 x 160 = 19,200 drills.
- Round drills: 30 x 3.57 = 107 across and 40 x 3.57 = 142 down, so 107 x 142 = 15,194 drills.
- In inches: a 12 x 16 in canvas (30.5 x 40.6 cm) holds 121 x 162 = 19,602 square drills.
- Per color: the split depends on the picture, so it comes from your chart's drill key.
- Buying: 19,200 square drills weigh roughly 84-91 g at 210-230 drills per gram. Kit bags hold about 200 drills; loose refills come in 1,000 or 2,000-count bags. Add 10-30% spare per color, as kits do.
