Diamond Painting Size Calculator
Convert between canvas centimeters and drill counts at the standard 2.5 mm pitch, and count the total drills in a design.
Result
Canvas size: 20.0 x 20.0 cm
Drills across: 80 x 80
Total drills: 6,400
Square drills sit on a 2.5 mm grid, round drills on 2.8 mm. Partial-coverage kits only fill the motif, so their totals are lower. Kits typically include 10-30% extra drills.
Want the exact drill count per DMC color? Upload a photo in the pattern maker and it builds the full chart and drill key for you.
Make a diamond painting chart from a photoThe formula
Full-coverage diamond painting sits on a fixed grid — 2.5 mm for square drills, 2.8 mm for round:
Square: drills across = canvas cm x 4
Round: drills across = canvas cm x 3.57
Worked example
You want a 30 x 40 cm full-coverage portrait:
- Drills: 120 x 160 = 19,200 total
- Per color: the exact split comes from your chart's drill key.
- Buying drills: kit bags hold about 200 drills, but loose refills come in 1,000 or 2,000-count bags or by the gram (roughly 210-230 square drills per gram). Kits pad each color by 10-30% — do the same.

The calculator tells you the size — the pattern maker does the rest: real DMC drill codes, square or round drills, and a drill key with counts per color.
