Exporting
OXS and Image Export
Export your pattern as an OXS file for other cross stitch software, or as a chart, realistic or hoop and frame mockup image for sharing and printing.
Not everything ends as a printed chart. Sometimes the destination is another program, a Discord server, or your Instagram feed. Two exports cover those, both in the File menu: Export OXS and Export Image.
OXS export
OXS is the open exchange format for cross stitch patterns. Exporting one means your Knytstudio pattern opens in WinStitch, MacStitch, FlossCross, and other software that speaks the format — with the design, the floss colors, and your backstitch intact.
This matters more than it sounds: your patterns are not locked in. If you collaborate with someone who charts in a desktop program, or you one day migrate your whole library elsewhere, OXS is the door. We would rather keep you with a great editor than with a locked format.
The export dialog lets you set the title, author, description, fabric count, and cloth color that get embedded in the file, and shows the finished size at that fabric count.
OXS export is available for cross stitch patterns. Like PDF export, the download is part of a pattern’s unlock: your first pattern is free, and after that you unlock each pattern once (from €2.99) or go Pro (€4/month) for every pattern.
Image export
Image export saves your pattern as a PNG — the fast, free way to get your design out of the editor and in front of people. Start by picking a Style:
- Chart only: the flat chart, as you see it on the canvas.
- Realistic: the finished look, like the editor’s realistic view.
- Mockup: your pattern as a finished piece in a hoop or a frame, ready to share. Not offered for knitting and crochet.
- Production sheet: the chart, a color preview, and the color key in one image. Available for cross stitch, needlepoint, and diamond painting.
For Chart only and Production sheet, you control how the chart looks:
- View Mode: Color only, Color + Symbols, or Symbols only, same as on the canvas.
- Symbol size: a slider from 60% to 150% for the two symbol modes.
- Grid Options: include or omit grid lines, the guide lines every 10 stitches, and the center lines.
- Labels: row and column numbers on or off. With numbers on, Number every sets the interval: Auto, 1, 5, or 10.
- Scale: 1x, 2x, or 3x, from compact preview to large and print-sharp. The pixel size shows under the buttons.
A clean Color only export with no grid works for a quick social media post; a symbols export with grid and labels works as a lightweight chart for a friend. For the full printed-pattern experience — multi-page chart, floss legend, cover page — see PDF export.
Chart, realistic, and mockup images are free with an account. The production sheet is the one image style that counts as an export: when you press Export, it follows the same unlock as PDF and OXS.
Realistic and mockup images
Realistic renders the pattern the way the editor’s realistic view shows it, with the same fabric color and lighting. You pick the Scale as for a chart. A very large pattern is scaled down to a size browsers can save, and the dialog tells you when that happens.
Mockup shows your pattern as a finished piece in a hoop or a frame on a soft background, with a live preview that updates as you change the options:
- Display: Hoop or Frame. Cross stitch and needlepoint get both; diamond painting and fuse beads get the frame.
- Frame color: Oak, Walnut, White, or Black.
- Size: Square (1080 x 1080) or Pinterest (1000 x 1500).
The whole pattern always fits inside the hoop or the frame’s mat opening, with a margin around it, so nothing is cropped. Every mockup carries a small “Made with KnytStudio” mark in the bottom right corner. With Pro you can untick Show “Made with KnytStudio” to leave it off; on other plans it stays on.
You see the hoop before you even reach the editor: when you turn a photo into a pattern, the Realistic preview shows the result in a hoop (a frame for diamond painting and fuse beads). Switch to Chart at the top of the preview to see the pattern without it.
Frequently asked questions
Which programs can open Knytstudio's OXS files?
OXS is the open cross stitch exchange format, readable by WinStitch, MacStitch, FlossCross, and other chart software. Your colors, floss codes, and backstitch travel along.
Is image export free?
Yes. Chart, realistic and mockup images are included with a free account. Only the production sheet counts as an export like PDF and OXS: free for your first pattern, after that you unlock the pattern or use Pro.
What resolution are exported images?
For chart and realistic images you choose a scale of 1x, 2x or 3x (10, 20 or 30 pixels per stitch), so the same 100-stitch pattern can be a small preview or a large, print-sharp image. Grid lines and row numbers are optional toggles. Mockups come in two fixed sizes: 1080 x 1080 and 1000 x 1500.
Can I remove the "Made with KnytStudio" mark from a mockup?
Yes, with Pro. Every hoop and frame mockup has a small "Made with KnytStudio" mark in the bottom right corner. With Pro you can untick it before exporting; on other plans it stays on.
